It seems almost anything can be connected to the Internet now: cars, watches, spectacles, smart meters in homes, machines on a production line. But what are the implications of this new IoT world for the solution provider? Are there already best known methods for avoiding some of the pitfalls?
The five tenets for IoT can be summarised as:
• World-class security as the foundation, using embedded hardware and software-level protection;
• Automated discovery and provisioning of edge devices to ease deployment;
• Data normalisation through protocol abstraction to improve interoperability;
• Broad analytics infrastructure from edge to cloud to realize customer value;
• Infrastructure to monetize hardware, software, and data management from edge to cloud.
As devices become connected to the Internet, they become vulnerable to malware, hacking and other types of attacks. Hackers might want to attack critical infrastructure for terrorist means, or might just want to exploit domestic appliances to send spam. Devices might fall victim to an untargeted attack propagating online too. The BBC reported in January that smart TV sets and fridges have been found sending spam, after being compromised. Anything connected must be protected.
In the IoT, many devices are being connected for the first time, and companies that have had no need to consider security in the past now find their products are under attack. The first step towards securing the IoT is to raise awareness of the threat and ensure that it is considered at every point in the infrastructure.
In order to accelerate IoT development aligned with the tenets, Intel is providing the industry with technologies that can address security and interoperability challenges to enable edge to cloud solutions. These solutions include essential Intel building blocks, such as security, gateways, and data management. They are being deployed at Daikin Appied*, the world’s largest air conditioning, heating, ventilating, and refrigeration company; Vnomics*, a leading provider of fleet management solutions; and by other leading providers in smart buildings and smart cities around the world.
IoT Development Kits
Intel offers several versions of IoT Development kits with a mix of performance, I/O, and software capabilities. There are different types of IoT developers, ranging from hobbyists and enthusiasts to professional developers, and their needs will vary as they go through the innovation, prototyping, and commercialization phases.
Developers and customers need secure and reliable IoT infrastructure, which is why Intel has defined key tenets to help ensure deployments satisfy these critical requirements. Moreover, developers can ensure these tenets are met by using development kits from Intel that include critical hardware and software building blocks for the IoT.
As the IoT evolves, standards will play an increasing role in enabling companies to accelerate their time to market and maximise their market size. Standards make it easier to integrate products with existing web services (such as social networks and online retailers), exchange data with other devices, and play a part in innovative new services too.
Intel is working with industry leaders such as AT&T*, Cisco*, GE*, and IBM* to create IoT solutions that are flexible and will help drive market adoption. Aligning on best practices to accelerate IoT deployments, this group of industry leaders has also formed the Industrial Internet Consortium.
