Iomega Clik! disks have been around for some time, and they're undoubtedly the cutest form of removable storage around. Each tiny 50mm disk is just 2mm thick and can hold 40Mb of data. Here we look at the laptop kit, which includes a PC card drive so you can take advantage of this useful media on the move.
The drive fits into a free Type II PC Card slot in your laptop, and could be used as a replacement for the floppy drive, giving several benefits. First, and most obviously, each 40Mb disk holds the equivalent of approximately 27 floppy disks, so you end up carrying less. Second, in slim notebooks which have swappable CD-ROM and floppy drives, the Clik! drive means you can leave the CD-ROM drive in, and forget about the floppy.
If you're part of a mobile workforce which primarily uses notebooks, the Clik! drive offers a handy way of transferring large files between machines. You only need one drive, as it is quickly and easily transferable between laptops with the disks themselves. We actually tried to use the standard disk controller drivers built into Windows 98, and the result was a usable disk in less than one minute from slotting the drive into a PC Card slot!
For optimal performance in our tests, we installed all the Iomega software from the CD, and used SiSoft Sandra 99 to benchmark the Clik! drive. The overall score revealed it was about 25 per cent slower than a Zip 100 drive, with sequential reads happening at 565Kb/sec and random reads at 519Kb/sec.
Interestingly, the write speeds were practically identical. Usually reading is faster than writing. So, using some simple mathematics, you can expect to fill the whole disk in about 73 seconds, which is not too long to wait.
Another benefit of Clik! over Zip drives for the mobile user is that no cables or external power are needed, so it really is ultra-portable.
IomegaWare tools and drivers, Copy Machine and QuikSync software is bundled with the drive. QuikSync is a backup utility that automatically backs up a folder of your choice onto a Clik! disk. It can also save revisions of files and allows you to access files directly from the disk without complex restore procedures. The drive and one disk are provided in the box, along with a stylish sliver case to protect these delicate devices.
