If you've been put off buying a Palm keyboard by the fact that it's just another item to carry, then the KeyCase is the solution. A very effective device that should be a staple part of any Palm user's kit. It's a tad expensive, though.
Keyboards for the Palm are nothing new, but the KeyCase from Logitech is a little different in that it utilises the latest flexible electronic fabric from ElekTex and has a cloth coating. When not in use the KeyCase wraps around the Palm, acting as a protective wallet.
Setting up the device takes little more than a few minutes, simply involving the installation of the driver software and a quick calibration of the keyboard.
The keyboard has an integrated cradle to allow communication with the handheld, which also acts as a Palm rest when typing. It is compatible with the Palm m125 and above.
The keyboard is approximately 265mm wide by 125mm high - almost the same height as a Palm - and, when wrapped around the Palm, gives the whole thing a size no bigger than the average sports wallet.
A functional loop of elastic holds the KeyCase closed, but a piece of plastic that came attached to it didn't last long. As its function is purely aesthetic, however, its loss is no big deal.
As it is constructed from cloth the KeyCase lacks the firm feel of other keyboards, but if you can touch-type you should have few problems adapting and will be typing at your usual speed before too long.
The keyboard layout is like any other, minus the number pad. Where function keys would normally be are several quick keys for functions such as cut, copy and paste, along with buttons for accessing the standard Palm applications - Memo, Date, Address, Mail and To Do.
The Keys are pressure sensitive and with three settings - low, medium and high - it easily copes with light or heavy-handed extremes of typing.
Bundled with the product is a copy of WordSmith, a professional word processor.
