Portable USB mini-drives have been around for years now, but have tended to come with fixed memory. The Bonzai, from SimpleTech, is one of a new breed offering removable memory that can be upgraded.
Should you need a larger storage capacity, rather than having to purchase an entirely new mini-drive you simply upgrade the memory inside the unit. The Bonzai is compatible with both Secure Digital (SD) and MMC (MultiMedia Cards) storage.
Upgrading the memory means either purchasing a new SD or MMC card, or utilising a larger card you may already have in your camera or other device.
If you own a digital camera or other device that uses the same media, it makes the process of transferring images to your PC easier - simply place the full card into the Bonzai drive and copy the files via drag and drop.
As you would expect the device is small, measuring just 7 x 3.3 x 1.27cm (WxHxD) in size.
With a USB 1.1 connection, the device is fully plug and playable and requires no external power or drivers to run. Simply insert the device and start transferring data.
Windows 98 users are the exception, needing to download and install a driver from the SimpleTech website first (the driver is 540KB in size, so takes only minutes to download).
If all your USB ports are located on the back of your PC, the Bonzai comes with a 4" extension cable to make connection easier.
If you're worried about losing such a small device (and at these prices you wouldn't want to lose it), don?t be ? the device can clipped to a shirt pocket, or use the provided neck strap to hang it around your neck.
Our review model came with a 32MB SD card, but retail versions are offered with the cheaper MMC cards at the following capacities and prices:
