HP has unveiled what it claims are the "world's most powerful entry workstations", including a form-factor 'mini' workstations bearing Nvidia Quadro or AMD Radeon Pro graphics cards.
The new Z-Series devices are aimed primarily at product designers, architects, City trading desks, and creative professionals who need more horse power than the average office worker.
The Z Workstation line-up comes in the form of three new devices, namely the HP Z2 Mini, HP Z2 Small Form Factor and HP Z2 Tower, as well as the HP EliteDesk 800 Workstation Edition.
The Z2 Mini G4 us arguably the most interesting of the devices, given its small-form factor. While the entry-level bears just an Intel Pentium G5400 (PDF), it comes with options to run Intel's latest Xeon CPUs and the choice of either Nvidia's Quadro P600 or P1000, or AMD's Radeon Pro WX4150.
HP claims that Z2 Mini G4 is the world's most powerful mini workstation - as well as the quietest - with the possibility of fitting up to 56 of the devices into a standard 42U rack, as well.
Prices for the HP Z2 Mini G4 will start at £675.
Next up in size, but not in price, is the HP Z2 small form-factor G4 Workstation. A starting price of £659 buys an Intel Pentium G5400-powered device, which is likely to struggle rendering Autodesk 3ds Max animations of any great complexity, but with the option of progressively upgrading (PDF) to Intel Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 or Xeon CPUs. It ships with four PCIe slots and dual M.2 storage slots.
The HP Z2 Tower G4 Workstation is a more standard workstation intended for demanding 3D projects. Packaged in a bog-standard PC case, it offers
An entry-level price of £685 will buy an Intel Core i3-8100 with Intel HD Graphics 630, which most certainly won't power through demanding 3D projects. However, the CPU can be upgraded all the way up through the Intel family to a Xeon E-2176G vPro. (PDF)
On top of the Intel Graphics, there are also options to bung in a proper workstation graphics card, including Nvidia the Quadro P400, P1000, P4000 and P5000, as well as the AMD Radeon Pro WX 3100 at the entry level, and AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100, which bears 8GB of GDDR5 dedicated memory.
Finally, the HP ElistDesk 800 Workstation edition is intended for 2D and 3D design and drafting, particularly SolidWorks and AutoCAD, as well as virtual reality developers.
"The customisation, expandability, performance upgradeability and I/O options [of the HP Z Workstation series] help future-proof customer purchases," claimed HP.
The devices should be available in the UK from August.
