Google and Facebook are working with an undersea technology company called TE SubCom to lay a high-capacity cable between Hong Kong and the US.
The firms will also work with Pacific Light Data Communication (PDLC) to build the 8,000-mile pipe, known as the Pacific Light Cable Network (PLCN), that will land in the US at Los Angeles.
It will have a capacity of 120Tbps, making it the highest capacity trans-Pacific route.
Brian Quigley, Google's submarine networking infrastructure director, said that the cable will start delivering in 2018, barring any problems.
"From the get-go, the PLCN is designed to accommodate evolving infrastructure technology, allowing us to independently choose network equipment and refresh optical technology as it advances," he said in a Google Cloud Platform blog post.
"Most importantly, the PLCN will bring lower latency, more security and greater bandwidth to Google users in the Asia Pacific region.
"In addition to our existing investments in Asia Pacific cloud regions and the FASTER cable system, PLCN expands our ability to serve people in Asia, including Google Cloud and G Suite customers."
PLDC chairman Wei Junkang added that bringing together such expertise underline how important the new route would be.
"The PLCN will be among the lowest-latency fibre-optic routes between Hong Kong and the US and the first to connect directly using ultra-high-capacity transmission," said PLDC chairman Wei Junkang.
"It is certainly gratifying that global technology companies like Google and Facebook have become co-investors in the PLCN.
"It is a strong signal that the PLCN will be trusted to address the capacity needs for internet and international communications services throughout the Pacific Rim. We envision this deployment as the initial step in PLDC's construction of a global network."
Google finished work earlier this year on a 60Tbps cable between Japan and the US dubbed Faster.
