IBM has struck a new partnership with telecoms firm AT&T in which the pair will combine their respective cloud, network and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms to help businesses accelerate IoT initiatives.
Announced today, the partnership will give developers access to IBM's Watson IoT platform and Bluemix developer services, combined with AT&T's IoT platforms such as the Flow Designer visual development tool and M2X data storage service, as well as access to AT&T's global telecoms network.
The two firms are pushing their commitment and investment in open source tools such as Node-Red and open standards like the MQTT messaging protocol as a part of the joint initiative, in a bid to enable developers to quickly and easily build and implement a wide variety of IoT solutions.
"We have heard the call from developers and businesses for more tools to make the IoT a reality, and together with AT&T we are bringing together powerful platforms and services to drive collaborative innovation," said IBM general manager for Watson IoT Harriet Green.
The combination of the Watson IoT, Bluemix and AT&T IoT platforms will enable developers to build applications that provide deeper insights from data collected from connected devices, according to IBM.
"This collaboration enables individual developers to tap the power of cognitive computing and combine it with massive amounts of data streaming from billions of connected devices, sensors and systems to create solutions that can help transform businesses and society alike," Green said.
The two firms are also working on a new starter kit to make it easier for developers to get up and running. Once completed, customers will be able to purchase the combined AT&T and IBM technologies in one toolkit for a complete set of IoT tools to start projects right away.
IBM launched a range of IoT starter kits in partnership with chip firm ARM last year, combining devices based on ARM's Cortex-M series embedded processors with IBM's Bluemix cloud services.
IBM also unveiled a collaboration with Cisco last month centred on the IoT, combining Watson technology and Cisco's edge analytics to let customers act more swiftly on critical data gathered at the network edge.
