Paul Coby, the CIO at department store group John Lewis, has been promoted to CIO of John Lewis Partnership, putting him in overall charge of IT across the organisation.
Coby will be responsible for IT at 47 department stores in the UK and 349 Waitrose supermarket branches. He will also be in overall charge of the IT behind logistics and supply chain systems, and warehouses including the company's growing home delivery business.
The structure of the organisation will not immediately change. John Lewis and Waitrose IT directors will continue to report to divisional managing directors, while the department stores group will recruit a new IT director to replace Coby.
Coby joined John Lewis from British Airways in 2011, and talked about his strategy in an in-depth interview with V3 sister site Computing in 2012.
John Lewis revealed in 2013 that the company had passed £1bn in annual web sales following a 40 per cent increase in sales generated via the JohnLewis.com website over the previous financial year.
These sales were supported by a new logistics system, based on Oracle ATG, implemented before Christmas that enables customers to order items until 7pm for collection in-store after 2pm the next day. This signalled a more wide-ranging shift to Oracle at the company.
Coby embarked on an ambitious plan in 2014 to replace around 50 legacy IT systems with Oracle E-Business Suite in a bid to make John Lewis more responsive and flexible, and allow the firm to get a complete view of customers across all channels more easily.
The company is currently mid-way through the rollout, which started in 2014 and is slated for completion by the end of 2018.
The John Lewis Partnership includes broadband, insurance, optician and foreign currency services as well as the core supermarket and department stores group.
