Microsoft is keeping up the pace of Windows 10 preview builds as the firm prepares for the release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, delivering Build 14371 for the PC just a day after the same build number was made available for mobile devices.
Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14371 was released overnight to testers on the Fast Ring of Microsoft's Windows Insider evaluation programme, and mostly comprises tweaks and fixes rather than new features. However, one notable addition addresses activation problems.
"We've received feedback from Windows Insiders who have run into activation issues on genuine Windows devices after making changes to device hardware such as replacing a hard drive or motherboard," explained Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider programme, announcing the new build on the Windows Experience blog.
This problem has plagued Windows users for a long time, but Microsoft now seems to be addressing it with an Activation Troubleshooter that will ship in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and is debuted in this preview build.
The Troubleshooter will fix the most commonly encountered activation problems, according to Sarkar, such as if a device has a digital licence, or "digital entitlement", for Windows 10 Pro from a previous activation, but the user has accidentally installed a different version over it.
Microsoft has also introduced the ability to link a Microsoft Account (MSA) to the digital licence for a device. If the user experiences activation difficulties, they will be able to use the MSA-linked digital licence to reactivate by running the Activation Troubleshooter.
Microsoft released the Windows 10 Mobile version of Preview Build 14371 earlier, which introduced a tap-to-pay capability for Windows phones through Microsoft Wallet, the firm's cloud-based payment service. However, this is currently supported only for customers in the US with Microsoft's Lumia 950, 950 XL and 650 handsets.
The two builds also deliver the usual number of bug fixes, which Microsoft previously indicated is a priority as the firm prepares for the release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, expected at the end of July.
On the PC, this includes improvements to the file download experience in Microsoft's Edge browser, and a fix for problem whereby some PDF files fail to print.
On the Mobile version, there are fixes for a fault in which tapping a notification in the Action Centre failed to do anything if Action Centre had had been opened over the Lock screen, and another where switching cellular data off while there was no internet connectivity sometimes resulted in the device freezing.
