Enterprise Linux firm Suse has released the latest version of its software-defined storage (SDS) platform based on a major new update to the Ceph open source project, and signed a deal with HPE that will see the platform deployed on its server hardware to deliver a scalable object storage solution.
Available immediately, Suse Enterprise Storage 3 builds on previous releases of the SDS platform, and is intended to help customers adapt to changing business and data demands, the firm said.
Like earlier releases, Suse Enterprise Storage 3 is based on the open source Ceph software project running atop the firm's Suse Linux Enterprise Server platform, and is designed for deployment on clusters of server nodes.
This release is claimed to be the first commercial platform to use the Ceph Jewel release, a major update to the open source project that adds features such as support for block, object and file storage via the Ceph filesystem.
It also adds multi-site object replication for disaster recovery, and a framework to support graphical user interface management tools in the shape of the openATTIC unified storage manager, according to Suse.
"Bringing Ceph storage innovation to market first - enterprise ready and fully supported - makes our customers more agile and able to take advantage of rapidly emerging innovation in their own enterprises," said Michael Miller, Suse's president of strategy, alliances and marketing.
The new release enables customers to transform storage infrastructure with the ability to seamlessly adapt new technologies using cost-efficient, resilient and redundant storage infrastructures on commodity hardware, he added.
Meanwhile, Suse has partnered with HPE on a Scalable Object Storage Solution that sees the Suse platform deployed on HPE server hardware.
It provides a fully supported and validated enterprise SDS solution that is scalable and cost effective, according to Suse, and which can lower the total cost of ownership for customers developing cloud and archival storage systems at petabyte scale.
Supported systems are the HPE Apollo 4000, a high-density server built for a high level of storage performance and efficiency, the mainstream two-socket ProLiant DL380, and HPE's Cloudline CL5200 tailored for service providers building and operating large-scale data centres.
