The NHS has selected Splunk Enterprise to provide data analytics and improve the performance of the NHS Choices website, indicating the healthcare service’s growing appetite to adopt more digital technology.
Splunk Enterprise will allow the NHS to see how people interact with the NHS Choices website, and to streamline access to wider NHS services and critical healthcare information.
NHS Choices receives 48 million visits a month, so the service has the scope to analyse a significant amount of data.
Splunk Enterprise is also being used to uncover the cause of any problems affecting the website. This includes ensuring that site upgrades do not have unexpected results, and detecting when an area of NHS Choices is unresponsive.
The data analytics platform can manage the flow of traffic to deal with spikes in visitor numbers when specific illnesses and health scares are mentioned in the media.
The NHS Choices team can identify a specific 60-second window when the website is hit with a spike in traffic and detect any impact it may have had.
Rick Fitz, senior vice president of IT markets at Splunk, claimed that the platform will allow the NHS to make data-led decisions.
“The healthcare industry is undergoing a significant transformation, and IT is increasingly placed at the forefront of innovative initiatives to improve patient care. Data of all forms is increasingly looked to for insights that can improve efficiency and patient results,” he said.
“By being able to streamline traditionally resource-intensive IT tasks through Splunk Enterprise, the healthcare industry can focus more time and resources on patient needs, while having more information with which to make better-informed strategic decisions.”
Adopting digital services across a large public service can be a slow and complex process, but the NHS is adopting more technologies as it follows the digital transformation agenda across the public sector.
