Dell has unveiled an upgraded version of its private cloud platform co-engineered with Red Hat, combining the latest Dell hardware with the newest version of Red Hat's OpenStack build to provide a fully integrated end-to-end solution that customers can deploy in their data centre.
Available now, Dell Red Hat OpenStack Cloud Version 5.0 is designed to provide customers with all the pre-validated and configured components needed to create an infrastructure-as-a-service private cloud based on the OpenStack platform, including new automation jointly engineered with Red Hat.
"This unique Dell and Red Hat automation tooling spans the entire core architecture and establishes the foundation for in-place seamless version upgrades," said Brent Doncaster, Dell's global product marketing manager for cloud solutions.
"We designed this solution to overcome the adoption challenges inherent in OpenStack and to speed time-to-value in a radically simplified way."
Version 5.0 is based on the newly released Red Hat OpenStack Platform 8, which includes the firm's Enterprise Linux 7 operating system integrated with the Liberty release of the OpenStack cloud framework and Red Hat's Ceph software-defined storage platform.
The infrastructure side comprises Dell PowerEdge R630/R730xd 13th-generation servers based on Intel's new Xeon E5-2600 v4 family of processors, plus Dell Networking S3048/4048 switches.
Multiple storage solutions can also be supported, such as Dell's EqualLogic, Compellent or PS and SC arrays via OpenStack Cinder plug-ins.
Meanwhile, the management software side provides deployment automation across all layers, hardware and software, fully integrated with Red Hat's OpenStack Platform Director tool for deploying and managing OpenStack infrastructure.
However, Dell said that customers still want the flexibility to choose optional components and to avoid a potential lock-in, and claimed that it has addressed this with the Dell Red Hat OpenStack Cloud.
"Our co-engineering work with Red Hat and others is solving this dilemma for our customers today with a new adaptive flexible reference architecture approach that brings together the combination of a powerful, scalable core architecture with selected extensions," Doncaster said.
The extensions are all validated in the same way as the core architecture to ensure a consistent seamless environment that just works, he added.
