Google has launched an iOS version of the SDK for its virtual reality Cardboard device in an effort to get more developers to take advantage of VR technology.
Google product manager Nathan Martz explained in a blog post that the iOS SDK has the same features as the Android version and is available now.
“Starting today, there’ll be a native Cardboard SDK for iOS. Provided in idiomatic Objective C, and packaged as a single, easy-to-use CocoaPod, this new SDK includes all of the features already available in the Cardboard SDK for Android,” he said.
The move came as part of a new update to the SDK that allows developers to turn 360-degree video and photo content into VR content with a tool called VR View.
VR View takes 360-degree images and transforms them into interactive experiences that can be viewed on a phone, Cardboard viewer or desktop computer by clicking and dragging. This can be tried out on the Google blog post.
"For native apps, you can embed a VR view by grabbing the latest Cardboard SDK for Android or iOS and adding a few lines of code,” Martz explained.
Martz said that doing this will allow businesses of all types to more easily create VR content for end users.
“From travel and real estate to news and entertainment, we hope embeddable VR views make it quick and easy to share your story and build immersive and engaging visual experiences your users will love. We're excited to see what you create," he added.
VR is seen as one of the major new areas of digital transformation allowing businesses to increase interactions with customers and clients, such as hotels letting customers experience a room or function centre remotely.
The technology is only now starting to enter the mainstream, and may take a while to become widespread, but Google's iOS SKD could boost adoption.
