The iPhone SE is now on sale starting from £359 for the 16GB model and £439 for the 64GB model. Apple will hope that the launch of the device delivers a mid-year sales boost and entices new iPhone owners thanks to the lower price.
The device is on sale in the UK, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, US Virgin Islands and the US.
The iPhone SE was unveiled by Apple last week and boasts almost the same specs as the bigger iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus devices.
Despite being a smaller phone the iPhone SE has the same A9 processor and 12MP iSight camera, which includes the ability to shoot 4K video. It also features the Touch ID fingerprint technology found in the newer iPhones and support for Apple Pay.
Apple said that the iPhone SE is aimed particularly at new users of iPhone devices, many of whom often choose the smaller 4in devices first, rather than the newer 4.7in and 5.5in devices.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said: "I’m really excited about iPhone SE. Many, many customers have asked for this and I think they’re really going to love it."
The launch of the device has echoes of the iPhone 5C, but analysts noted that the high-level specs, combined with the reasonable entry price of $400, mean that it may have a far better chance of appealing to buyers.

The device comes in four colours: space grey, gold, rose gold and silver.
Apple also announced that the new iOS 9.3 software update is available immediately, meaning that new iPhone SE owners can update to the latest version of iOS out of the box.
Apple will be hoping the device gives it a mid-year sales kick as investors were underwhelmed by the lack of growth in iPhone sales the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus delivered, as it only managed to match the level of the iPhone 6 from the year before.
