Microsoft is readying a tool designed to make it easier for organisations to upload a diverse range of data types to Azure Data Factory as part of a big data analytics project. The goal is to enable organisations to move data to and from Azure in a friction-free and reliable way using a simple code-free wizard, the firm said.
Azure Data Factory is Microsoft's cloud-based data integration service for orchestrating the process of ingesting, preparing, transforming and analysing data. However, getting the data into the cloud in the first place can be a challenge when it may be stored in a variety of systems and formats on the customer's premises. It may also involve very large volumes.
Microsoft claimed that Copy Wizard will make it easier for organisations to move data between Azure Blob storage, Azure SQL, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Azure Data Lake and a customer's on-premises SQL Server instances, using an interactive interface to manage the process.
Copy Wizard will support a number of situations, including one-time data copying as part of getting data to Azure in a development and evaluation process, to setting up a pipeline to regularly shift data from on-premise to the Azure cloud or vice versa as part of a production deployment.
"This is the first milestone and over the next few weeks, we are going to evolve this experience and enable all the existing 20+ connectors that are supported by Azure Data Factory today," said Anand Subbaraj, Microsoft's principal programme manager for Azure Data Factory, in a posting on the Azure blog.
"We are targeting to address the requirements for data scientists to upload sample data into Azure for experimentation and data developers to orchestrate data movement on a cadence for business-critical tasks such as loading an enterprise's data lake or data warehouse, or performing predictive analytics in the cloud at scale."
The Copy Wizard experience has been designed with big data in mind from the start, according to Microsoft, and moving hundreds of folders, files or tables has been made simple and seamless to configure.
Azure Data Factory customers can try out the Copy Wizard today from the ADF summary blade in the Azure customer portal, selecting a new or an existing data factory and using the 'Copy data' tile on the summary blade to launch it.
