Samsung Electronics is now officially shipping the PM1633a solid state drive (SSD), which is claimed as the largest of its kind on the market with a capacity of 15.36TB.
The Samsung PM1633a drive is aimed at enterprise storage systems, and features a 12Gbps serial attached SCSI host interface and a standard 2.5in drive format for ease of inclusion into servers and data centre storage arrays.
The drive was announced last year at the Flash Memory Summit in California, and dwarfs many standard hard drives.
It is constructed by combining 512 of Samsung's 256Gbit V-NAND memory chips. The 256Gbit dies are stacked in 16 layers to form one 512GB package, and the drive contains 32 of these flash packages.
The 2.5in form factor allows vendors and IT professionals to fit twice as many of the drives in a standard 19in 2U rack enclosure, compared with an equivalent 3.5in drive, according to Samsung.
The PM1633a has a random read/write of between 20,000 and 32,000 IOPS with sequential read/write speeds of 1200MBps. That compares with 500-600MBps for an average drive.
Samsung said that the PM1633a can support one complete drive write per day, meaning that 15.36TB of data can be written every day without failure, a level of reliability that will improve cost of ownership for enterprise storage systems.
Expect this to be the first of several announcements of this kind this year. SanDisk and Toshiba, which share a fabrication plant, have made no secret of their plans for similar 48-layer Nand chips to those used by Samsung, and the others follow pretty quickly when one of the major manufacturers throws its hat into the ring.
Samsung said that it will provide a range of capacity options in the PM1633a SSD portfolio. These will comprise 7.68TB, 3.84TB, 1.92TB, 960GB and 480GB models, all due to ship later this year.
The cost of the PM1633a has not been disclosed.
