The .cloud domain is now open for anyone to buy on a first-come, first-served basis. Over 70 registrars worldwide are now accepting orders for .cloud registrations, including GoDaddy, 1&1, Name.com, Domain.com and OVH.
The Worldof.cloud website contains more information on the launch, including a list of several existing customers, such as Weebly, Screencloud and Canonical.
The move follows the Priority Registration phase when 2,000 orders were placed for 200 domains, some of which included duplicate requests that will be assigned via auction.
Francesco Cetraro, head of registry operations at .cloud, is confident that the domain will continue to prove popular given the initial interest already generated.
“Today marks an important day for everyone who has been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to own and use a .cloud domain,” he said.
Cetraro added that the priority phases were also very well subscribed, showing "a clear interest among companies and individuals” to use the domain to showcase cloud-focused offerings.
One early adopter of the new domain is Iseult Ward, co-founder of FoodCloud, who said that it will help to boost the brand's identity.
“.cloud synced perfectly with our company name and brand. By using .cloud we can clearly explain to the public and our key audiences what we do and how our app and web-based business is powered by the cloud,” he said.
The launch of new domains has seen many firm splash the cash on new URLs. Amazon recently spent a hefty $4.6m on the .buy generic top-level domain while Dot Tech bought .tech for $6.7m.
