BT has revealed that the UK-wide broadband outage on Tuesday was the result of a "faulty router".
The company said in an update on the situation that services have been restored and that anyone still experiencing problems should employ the classic 'switch it off and on again' tactic.
"BT is confident that services have been fully restored following an outage that affected several hundred thousand customers earlier today. A faulty router was to blame for the outage and we apologise to those customers who were affected," the firm said.
"Most customers will be able to access their broadband without taking any action but some may need to reboot their equipment."

The incident began on Tuesday afternoon, and customers flocked to Twitter to voice their frustration.

BT has since confirmed that the problem has been fixed. The company had not elaborated on the cause of the downtime until now, but did rule out a "malicious attack".
“We’ve been working hard to fix the issue and are glad to report that nearly every customer affected is now reconnected, approximately two hours after the problem started," BT said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“We apologise to any affected customers for the inconvenience. There is no evidence at this stage to suggest that we were subject to a malicious attack.”
