Apple has revealed that owners of its products spent a staggering $1.1bn in the App Store in the two weeks over the Christmas and New Year period ending 3 January.
New Year’s Day 2016 was the biggest single day of sales in App Store history at $144m, breaking the previous record just a week before on Christmas Day.
Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller claimed that the huge spend on apps underlined how popular the firm’s devices had been over the Christmas holidays.
“We are excited that our customers downloaded and enjoyed so many incredible apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV, spending over $20bn in the App Store last year alone,” he said.
"We're grateful to all the developers who have created the most innovative and exciting apps in the world for our customers.”
Apple noted that the huge Christmas app splurge means that the App Store has now brought in some $40bn for developers since 2008.
Interestingly $13bn of this was generated in the past year alone, suggesting that the app economy is still in a major growth phase and that people are more willing to spend money to access key content and services as device capabilities improve.
Apple also boasted that the huge success of the app economy in iOS is now a major job driver in the US and elsewhere, showing estimates that 1.9 million people alone in the US are employed directly or indirectly because of Apple apps.
The company has previously said that around 1.2 million jobs in Europe and 1.4 million jobs in China have been created because of the App Store.
The huge sales could be welcome news to investors who have slightly cooled on Apple’s stock in the past few days after reports that orders to its Chinese suppliers have eased, leading to concerns of an iPhone sales slowdown in the year ahead.
