A major Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage over the weekend hit major clients of the cloud platform as well as some of Amazon's own services.
The incident occurred on Sunday 20 September, with an AWS facility in North Virginia listed as being the root cause of the fault. This also meant that several Amazon services, such as its Simple Email Service and CloudWatch, were knocked offline.
Amazon said the cause of the outage was to do with “increased API error rates”.
“AWS Lambda experienced significantly elevated API failures and latencies in the US-EAST-1 Region," the firm said on its status page.
“We identified the root cause, the error has been corrected, and the service is operating normally. Events delayed during the service interruption are being processed now.”
The incident underlines the issues with using public cloud platforms to host services. Any fault with the infrastructure knocks systems offline, which can cause huge business disruption and result in loss of business.
One service affected was SocialFlow, with its vice president of product development noting the impact the outage had caused.

Others saw the funny side of the situation, though.
The AWS downtime was followed on Monday by a global outage for Skype, with users on its Mac and Windows clients unable to log on to the service. Skype urged people to use the web version of the tool, but this caused the service to crash or become unavailable.
“We are working hard to fix an issue which is preventing some users from logging in and using Skype," said a Microsoft spokesperson.
