Samsung Electronics has begun mass production of high-capacity, low-power memory components that will be able to drive the next generation of mobile devices with the ability to handle more demanding applications.
The company said that it is now mass producing the industry's first 12Gbit low power DDR4 (LPDDR4) mobile memory. This brings a larger capacity and highest speed available for mobile DRAM chips, while offering excellent energy efficiency, reliability and ease of design, Samsung said.
"By initiating mass production of 12Gbit LPDDR4 mobile DRAM in an extremely timely manner, we are now not only helping OEMs to accelerate their moves to the next generation of mobile devices, but providing functionality that will give mobile consumers greatly enhanced user experiences," said Samsung Electronics vice president of memory sales and marketing Joo Sun Choi.
The new 12Gbit LPDDR4 memory enables 3GB or 6GB of mobile DRAM in a single package using just two chips and four chips respectively, and is the only solution that can provide a 6GB LPDDR4 package, according to the firm.
The 6GB package can fit into the same space used for currently available 3GB LPDDR4 packages, doubling the memory that can be fitted into upcoming smartphone designs without making them larger or bulkier.
The new components are manufactured using an existing 20nm process technology, but are more than 30 percent faster than current 8Gbit LPDDR4 memories while consuming 20 percent less energy, Samsung claimed.
The firm announced its first 8Gbit LPDDR4 memory components at the start of last year, stating that they would offer data rates up to twice those of DDR3 memory, while simultaneously reducing power consumption by using lower voltages.
Samsung said that it expects the benefits of its new 12Gbit LPDDR4 mobile memory will see it adopted in a range of application areas beyond smartphones and tablets, to include ultra-slim PCs, digital appliances and automotive devices.
