Twitter has started providing the ability to send direct messages of up to 10,000 characters, removing the previous 140-character limit.
The company announced its intention to remove the limit in June and has confirmed that it has now started rolling out the change to Android and iOS apps, Twitter.com, TweetDeck and Twitter for Mac.
Twitter said that the change will roll out worldwide over the next few weeks, so may not be immediately available to everyone. V3 tested the direct message function on iOS and Twitter.com but was still limited to 140 characters.
Twitter product manager Sachin Agarwal said that the reason for removing the direct message limit is to make it easier for people to have in-depth conversations in private, while still retaining the brevity of the main Twitter site.
“While Twitter is largely a public experience, Direct Messages let you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements and events that unfold on Twitter,” he said.
“Today’s change is another big step towards making the private side of Twitter even more powerful and fun.”
Agarwal also confirmed that, while Twitter is removing the character limit for direct messages, it has no intention of doing the same for standard Twitter posts.
"Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today, rich with commentary as well as photos, videos, links, Vines, gifs and emoji. So start working on those sonnets," he said.
The move comes a day after Twitter revealed a huge surge in data requests from government agencies relating to accounts on the site. Requests for data in the UK nearly doubled, rising from 166 over a six-month period to 299.
This suggests that spilling information via direct messages now that the limit is being removed may not be the wisest thing to do.
