BlackBerry is cutting more jobs in a move to make its workforce more efficient and return the company to profit.
The Canadian handset and software firm has yet to confirm exactly how many employees it will trim from its workforce, which numbered 7,000 in 2014.
The company said a statement sent to V3: "As BlackBerry moves into the next stage of its turnaround, we remain focused on driving efficiencies across our global workforce.
"Our intention is to reallocate resources in ways that will best enable us to capitalise on growth opportunities while driving toward sustainable profitability across all facets of our business.
"As a result, some employees have been impacted. We know that our employees have worked hard on behalf of our company and we are grateful for their commitment and contributions."
The cuts follow on from BlackBerry revealing similar plans in May to shed an unspecified number of workers from its mobile division in a bid to consolidate its business and become profitable again.
A statement at the time described ambitions to improve revenues in hardware, software and licensing activity, and the latest cuts are being touted as an expansion on this strategy.
The firm has been plagued by declining mobile hardware sales, and the poorly received BlackBerry Passport smartphone failed to change the situation.
The software division is in better health and appears to offer hope for the company's future. BlackBerry's last set of financial results showed a $300m decline in quarterly revenue and a $28m loss, in stark contrast to a profit of $28m three months earlier.
Surprisingly, BlackBerry is rumoured to be working on an Android phone, despite its recent record in the smartphone hardware market.
It could be argued that a partnership with Google, which enjoys success in the mobile arena, might help BlackBerry to reverse its fortunes.
The latest statistics from research firm Kantar WorldPanel ComTech show that BlackBerry holds a tiny 0.5 percent of the UK smartphone market, and that Android dominates despite the Samsung Galaxy S6 failing to have much of an impact on its market share.
