Google has seemingly acted to take some of the shine off the incoming Apple Music service by offering its own free, but ad-supported, Play Music.
Apple Music is due soon and will launch with artist support and an initial three-month free trial period.
Google is countering this with a free tester that might encourage people to sign up to the subscription alternative.
"Need some music right now to make whatever you're doing better? Even if you're not already a Google Play Music subscriber, we've got you covered," said Elias Roman, Google product manager, in a blog post.
"Google Play Music now has a free, ad-supported version in the US, giving you a new way to find just the right music and giving artists another way to earn revenue."
Obvious connections are being made between Google's offer and Apple Music, but it could also be a reaction to a low subscriber base.
"We hope you'll enjoy it so much that you'll consider subscribing to Google Play Music to play without ads, take your music offline, create your own playlists, and listen to any of the 30 million songs in our library on any device and as much as you like," added Roman.
"You'll also get ad-free, offline and background features for music videos on YouTube. And, with or without a subscription, you can store and play up to 50,000 songs from your own collection for free."
Apple Music has already had its share of controversy after pop star Taylor Swift complained about the three-month free trial period during which artists would not be remunerated.
The company made a swift U-turn. Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, said in response to Swift's statement that all artists will now be paid during the trial period, adding that the firm "will always make sure that artists are paid".
