HP has joined the ranks of vendors unveiling new devices ready for the launch of Windows 10 with an 8in tablet aimed at business users boasting audio support for Cortana and videoconferencing, security features, and a claimed eight hour battery life.
Due to be available in Europe from July, the HP Pro Tablet 608 is the firm's first Windows 10 commercial tablet. It has an 8in screen with a high resolution 2048x1536 display, and is based on Intel's newly launched Cherry Trail Atom Z8500 quad-core processor with up to 4GB of memory and 128GB of solid state disk storage.
Weighing 450g and measuring just 8.35mm thick, the Pro Tablet 608 is designed for mobile working, and is claimed to offer up to eight hours of battery life between charges. It is built with a metal-reinforced chassis and Corning Gorilla Glass 4 to protect the screen.
Dual microphones and noise-cancelling software provide audio support for Cortana, while dual front-facing stereo speakers combined with a front-facing 2MP camera offer support for videoconferencing, HP said.
HP claimed that the Pro Tablet 608 offers enterprise-class security and manageability, with an integrated trusted platform module and HP Client Security software.
It also supports customisable images and firmware settings, plus an updated version of HP Touchpoint Manager for enhanced security and manageability, which is available under subscription licensing.
Touchpoint Manager is a cloud-based management tool launched last year aimed chiefly at small to medium businesses. The update adds new capabilities, including allowing administrators centrally to deploy and manage mobile applications specified by the organisation.
One notable feature is a new USB Type-C port, offering high data transfer speeds and faster battery charging, although the downside is that adapter cables are required for existing USB peripherals.
HP said that the Pro Tablet 608 offers an alternative form factor to larger tablet devices for industry-specific use cases. To support this, the firm is offering HP Pro Tablet Mobile Retail Solution (pictured), a durable case that can accommodate the tablet along with third-party mobile payment terminals, including EMV, NFC, MSR and most digital wallets.
Other optional accessories include a pen, rugged case, travel keyboard and portable dock.
The HP Pro Tablet 608 will be priced from £389 + VAT, and will ship with Windows 8.1 until Windows 10 is available.
