Amazon Web Services (AWS) has updated its Lambda service that runs code in response to events, adding the ability for developers to write Lambda functions in Java, including support for Java 8 features.
Announcing the new support on the AWS Official Blog, Jeff Barr, chief evangelist for AWS, said that developers can start writing their Lambda functions in Java immediately.
"Today we are making Lambda even more useful by giving you the ability to write your Lambda functions in Java. We have had many requests for this and the team is thrilled to be able to respond.
"This is the first in a series of additional language options that we plan to make available to Lambda developers."
With Java now supported, Lambda code can make use of Java 8 features, along with any desired Java libraries. Developers can also use the AWS SDK for Java to make calls to the AWS APIs, according to Barr.
AWS Lambda is a relatively new addition to the platform, and was introduced by chief technology officer Werner Vogels at last year's AWS re:Invent conference in November.
However, the service has proved popular with developers, and AWS earlier this year added the ability to call Lambda functions directly from code as well as them being triggered by an event.
The recently launched synchronous invocation capability means that Lambda is fast becoming a favourite choice for building back-end services for mobile, web and Internet of Things applications, Barr said.
Lambda makes it possible to write threads of code that are run only when a specific event happens, with numerous triggers supported by AWS.
This could be a new image file being uploaded to an Amazon S3 bucket, for example, prompting an algorithm to sort or process the image in some way.
