The pocket-sized Raspberry Pi Model B+ computer is on track to sell one million units this year, according to Eben Upton, chief executive of the Raspberry Pi Foundation, despite competition from a newer and more capable rival.
The Raspberry Pi has always sold well, rapidly clocking up three million sales. The second incarnation was released earlier this year, and again had an immediate impact on the market.
The older unit, the Model B+ had its price cut recently. Upton said in a Twitter message that the change in selling price led to an immediate spike in sales.
Sales of @Raspberry_Pi Model B+ spiked *hard* last week after we cut the price to $25. Expecting to do a million units just of B+ in 2015.— Eben Upton (@EbenUpton) May 20, 2015
Roughly $10, or around £6, was cut off the price of the hardware shortly after the $9 microcomputer named CHIP gathered attention on crowdsourcing site Kickstarter.
Upton said that the price cut is the result of economies of scale and production improvements.
"A side effect of the production optimisations that allowed us to hit the $35 target price for Raspberry Pi 2 is that the Model B+ is now much cheaper to manufacture than when it was introduced," he wrote on the Raspberry Pi blog at the time.
"We've decided to drop its list price to $25 (£16). If you're looking for a Raspberry Pi with networking and multiple USB ports, and don't need the extra performance or memory that the Raspberry Pi 2 brings, you might want to check it out."
The Raspberry Pi 2 has already shifted some one million units since being released this February. The original model moved some 4.5 million units.
The charitable Raspberry Pi Foundation is pleased with the reaction that the device has received from the community, and said in February that the results were exceeding expectations.
"Our original aim was to get more kids into computing by giving them the same experience as people like me who grew up in the 1980s with a computer in their bedroom that was hackable," he said.
"The real surprise for us has been the level of interest from hobbyists and the industry."
