LAS VEGAS: Entertainment powerhouse NBCUniversal has saved over $30m by migrating its IT systems to a hybrid cloud model.
NBCUniversal CTO of infrastructure and IT operations Eric Craig revealed the saving during a session at EMC World attended by V3, claiming the company was forced to rethink its architecture following major changes in customers' viewing habits.
"The big explosion in media has been the boom of platforms where we can play content. It's win for the consumer as they have more choice and win for us as we can get more eyeballs on our content, but it's a scramble for IT as we have to support it," he said.
"We're experimenting with a lot of new business models for this. The trial and time to business with our IT experiments is important and we're focused on the ability to provide public cloud ease of access within our internal infrastructure. [To do this] we're going with a hybrid model."
NBCUniversal reportedly started its migration focusing on virtualisation, which has already helped radically reduce IT spending.
"We've gone through a journey to this. Some of the early success involved removing tons of equipment from our data centre, cutting $30m operating costs through virtualisation," he said.
Craig said the next stage of the firm's IT strategy will see it work to create a "brokerage" system in its private cloud using EMC technologies.
"The big thing for me is focusing on hybrid cloud. We're crafting a rich private cloud that will serve as a broker to the public cloud [where] we can take a look at the workloads and financial impacts of services," he said.
"With EMC we're taking a few steps with the rapid provisioning to our private cloud for departments."
Craig said th company had to assess whether it can then move workloads into the public cloud on a case-by-case basis.
"[For example] on the production side not only do we produce our own content but other companies come to shoot on our lot. We have to figure out how to secure them and give them what they need," he said.
He added the firm chose to use a hybrid approach due to concerns about pushing sensitive information or intellectual property into the public cloud.
NBCUniversal is one of many firms leveraging hybrid cloud technology to reduce costs.
Earlier at EMC World, Texas-based Energy Future Holdings (EFH) revealed plans to use virtualisation and hybrid cloud technologies to facilitate a $54m cost saving within the next five years.
