Jive has released Chime, a messaging app for iOS, Android, Windows and Mac that it claims is designed to help people work better together.
Chime allows workers to have one-to-one or group conversations with their colleagues across different company departments, either on mobile or desktop devices.
Users can start a conversation within Chime on a mobile device while outside the office then seemlessly continue that discussion on a desktop or laptop once they return to their desk.
Chime has a simple uncluttered interface in the style of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, and a security layer designed to keep cross-company messages private.
Elisa Steele, chief executive at Jive, said that although Chime faces competition from other enterprise communication tools, its clean and simple interface will give it the edge over the likes of Microsoft's Yammer, Skype for Business and current industry darling Slack, which signed up 8,000 customers within 24 hours of its August 2013 launch.
"With the fast pace of business today, co-workers need simple, singularly focused, mobile apps to work together in any context, at any time and on any device," said Steele.
Unlike consumer-oriented communication apps such as Skype, Chime offers IT managers an administration console that allows them to add, remove and edit employee profiles, but that functionality comes at a premium of $2 per user per month.
Employees can set their personal notification preferences to prevent being bombarded by new message alerts, and can see if their messages have been read and whether co-workers are responding.
Jive will face stiff competition in the enterprise messaging market, particularly from Microsoft, which has integrated Yammer and Skype for Business into Office 365 and Dynamics CRM.
Jive will also need to keep a careful eye on other rivals pursuing a slice of the enterprise communication space, especially V3 Startup Spotlight featured cloud collaboration company Huddle.
