Salesforce is expanding its cloud platform into the human resources space with the introduction of Salesforce for HR, which will see the customer relationship management firm take on Workday.
Salesforce for HR is built on the cloud, mobile and data technologies found in the core Salesforce platform, effectively reworking the existing customer-facing tools for an organisation to use internally.
These tools include Employee Journeys, designed to help the HR department ensure that new employees acclimatise with their new employer, and HR Help Desk, a Service Cloud-powered tool that provides a digital approach to solving HR queries and problems.
Employee Communities, meanwhile, is a tool built on top of the company's Chatter enterprise social application which allows more in-depth conversations between employees and HR departments.
Salesforce HR Analytics is also part of the HR suite to give company leaders insight into the performance and productivity of HR activity based on data.
Engagement Apps uses the Salesforce1 platform and partners such as Deloitte, allowing developers to build and deploy mobile apps for HR personnel to carry out training, recruitment and other business processes beyond the confines of the office.
Alex Dayon, president of products at Salesforce, said that cloud, social, mobile and data science technologies are having a "game-changing" effect on external customer engagement, and that Salesforce for HR can "bring the same transformation to their own employees".
This is not Salesforce's first foray into the HR arena. The company's Work.com tool allows HR to track the performance of sales representatives.
Work.com is based around monitoring, but Salesforce for HR is designed to pursue employee engagement with the goal of creating connections between a company and its workers.
Salesforce for HR can draw employee data from HR systems provided by the likes of Workday and PeopleSoft, but the push into the HR sector could see Salesforce bumping heads with these companies over enterprise customers.
Salesforce appears to be exploring multiple routes for its cloud services, having recently announced analytics and developer apps for the Apple Watch.
