Toshiba has announced new mobile devices based on Intel's Atom processors, comprising a mini 2-in-1 laptop with a detachable keyboard and two tablet devices that come with a TruPen stylus to enable capture of handwriting and sketches.
Available from the first quarter of 2015, the new systems are all based on Intel's Atom Z3735F processor, a quad-core chip clocked at 1.33GHz, and all ship with Microsoft's Windows 8.1 Update operating system as standard.
The Satellite Click Mini is described as a compact and affordable 2-in-1 laptop and tablet, with an 8.9in screen that can detach from the keyboard section to function as a standalone Windows tablet.
Weighing just 470g for the tablet and 1kg when docked, the system is portable, yet still features a claimed battery life of up to 16 hours in its docked configuration.
The display of the Satellite Click Mini boasts an impressive resolution of 1920x1200 pixels, despite its small size, but the system ships with just 2GB of memory - the maximum supported by the Atom processor - and comes with a 32GB eMMC solid state drive.
A year's subscription to Microsoft Office 365 is included, which provides 1TB of OneDrive cloud-based storage.
Meanwhile, Toshiba's Encore 2 Write tablets will be available in two versions, one with an 8in screen and one with a 10.1in screen. Both feature the same basic specifications as the Satellite Click Mini, with the Atom Z3735F processor, 2GB memory and 32GB of storage.
One notable feature of the Encore 2 Write models is that they ship with a TruPen device.
This allows greater precision and control during certain tasks, as well as the ability to take notes in meetings or lectures, make sketches, edit photos or simply use when it's more natural to create by hand, according to Toshiba.
The TruPen is powered by Wacom technology, and is complemented by a pre-installed TruNote handwriting application.
This enables pen input to be captured and converted for use in Microsoft Office, in the form of new emails in Outlook or presentations in PowerPoint.
Both the 8in Encore 2 Write WT8PE-B and the 10.1in Encore 2 Write WT10PE-A have a display resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, and a claimed battery life of up to 8.5 hours. The 8in model weighs in at 389g, while its larger sibling weighs 557g.
Pricing for the Satellite Click Mini is set to be £249 in the UK, while the Encore 2 Write WT8PE-B will cost £199 and the Encore 2 Write WT10PE-A will also be £249.
