US retailer Staples has updated its customers on the recent hack attack on the company, and admitted that around 1.16 million payment cards might be at risk.
The retailer said that it has no evidence of malicious activity at this stage, but is offering assurance and ID protection services to customers who may have been affected.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Staples is offering free identity protection services, including credit monitoring, identity theft insurance, and a free credit report, to customers who used their payment cards at those stores during specific time periods," the firm said.
"Overall, the company believes that approximately 1.16 million payment cards may have been affected."
Staples first announced the hack in October, telling V3 that it was looking into an incident involving the company's point of sale systems.
"Staples is in the process of investigating a potential issue involving credit card data and has contacted law enforcement," the company said in a statement at the time.
"We take the protection of customer information very seriously, and are working to resolve the situation.
"If Staples discovers an issue, it is important to note that customers are not responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported on a timely basis."
The firm's internal investigation found that malware had been added to point of sale systems in a number of outlets across the US. Staples said that some personally identifiable information may been exposed.
The malware has been found and eradicated, according to the company.
