EE has announced the acquisition of a company called Mainline Communications as part of an effort to boost its sales to businesses. The deal comes amid talks between EE and BT about a potential £12.5bn acquisition.
The financial details of EE’s purchase of Mainline were not revealed, but the company said that the deal is designed to give it a greater presence in the business market, as outlined by Gerry McQuade, chief marketing officer at EE.
“Mainline is a highly responsive, efficient and entrepreneurial distributor with excellent business practices and partnerships,” he said.
“By acquiring Mainline, we will be able to extend their capabilities in support of our indirect B2B sales strategy and help us achieve our goal to be the top communications provider for businesses in the UK.”
EE already held a 26 percent share in Mainline and the pair have worked together for several years. The deal to fully incorporate the company into EE's sales operation should provide greater efficiencies and reduced costs.
“Having been a part of the EE family for some time, we are proud to have played a key role in building and supporting EE’s business customer base,” said Andrew Boden, managing director of Mainline.
“We are excited to be entering this new chapter in our relationship with EE, and we look forward to helping EE forge even more successful relationships with its channel partners.”
The purchase is unlikely to have much impact on the BT deal, as BT already has a strong presence in the business market and will undoubtedly want to expand this into mobile deals if the acquisition of EE goes ahead.
As such, the completed acquisition of Mainline will probably be another entry in the plus column for BT's management.
