Intel has bought Canadian company PasswordBox in an effort to tackle the problems caused by having to remember multiple passwords for websites and services. Financial terms of the acquisition were not revealed.
Intel said that PasswordBox will become part of the Safe Identity division within Intel Security Group as the company looks for ways to address ‘password fatigue’ brought on by the proliferation of online accounts.
“Everyone can relate to password fatigue,” said Chris Young, senior vice president and general manager of Intel Security Group.
“Intel Security and PasswordBox share the same goal of improving digital identity protection across all devices and platforms. We believe we have the technology, expertise and reach to bring simple, secure access to consumers worldwide.”
Intel outlined three areas where it sees the acquisition of PasswordBox helping in its mission to improve web security.
The first is one-click or one-tap sign-in to services on websites and apps to remove the need for multiple passwords.
The second is to create new authentication technologies to help people prove they are who they say they are when accessing services.
Thirdly, Intel wants to incorporate these capabilities into hardware and software so that the services are built-in and available from the off.
Daniel Robichaud, chief executive of PasswordBox, said that the move to Intel will allow the firm’s technologies to benefit many thousands of people.
“PasswordBox has spent the last two years building a product that people love, trust and use around the world every day,” he said.
“We share Intel Security’s vision of simple, secure access and identity protection across all platforms and devices.
"Together, we believe we can offer our customers world-class technology, expertise and support to bring such access anywhere - all backed by Intel.”
The announcement comes on the same day as reports suggesting that Intel could be lined up as a partner for Google's Glass device in an effort to target the wearable technology at the business market.
