A network of Quantum Technology Hubs at four UK universities is to conduct research into quantum mechanical effects and how they can be harnessed for use in technology.
The network will involve 17 universities and 132 companies, and is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) from a £270m investment detailed last year as part of the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme.
Announced at the University of Birmingham, the network will be based around four hubs that will be led by the universities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Oxford and York.
Greg Clark, minister of state for universities, science and cities, explained that the initiative is expected to lead to new discoveries that enhance the understanding of quantum mechanics and how it can be applied in various fields such as quantum computing.
"This investment in quantum technologies has the potential to bring game-changing advantages to future timing, sensing and navigation capabilities that could support multi-billion pound markets in the UK and globally," he said.
"Today's announcement is another example of the government's recognition of the UK's science base and its critical contribution to our sustained economic growth."
The UK National Quantum Technologies Programme aims to ensure the successful transition of quantum technologies from laboratory to industry.
The programme is expected to deliver a suite of research and innovation investments from a number of partners, including the EPSRC, Innovate UK, the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, the National Physical Laboratory, GCHQ, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and the Knowledge Transfer Network.
