Microsoft has inked deals with Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines to equip pilots with Surface Pro 3 tablets.
Austrian Airlines has begun deploying 650 Surface Pro 3s to pilots, and expects to have deployed 1,000 units by the end of the year.
The Lufthansa deal will see the airline deploy 5,000 Surface Pro 3 devices to pilots sometime between February and March 2015.
The Surface Pro 3s will connect directly to the airlines' planes and will replace paper navigation charts and aircraft reference material.
Microsoft Surface senior director Cyril Belikoff explained that the devices plug directly into the plane's electronics to provide power, data and display connectivity through one connection.
"For pilots, this means added benefits such as automatic updates to navigational and operational content and access to critical real-time information like weather, wind and turbulence data," he said.
Austrian Airlines pilot Philipp Haller said that the Surface Pro 3 deployment is part of a wider move to digitise the company's systems.
"Starting in the late 1990s with the arrival of the first laptops in the flight deck, the dream of a completely paperless cockpit is now actually becoming a reality thanks to the Surface tablets from Microsoft," he said.
Belikoff described the deals as proof that the Surface Pro is gaining traction in the business market.
"We have been clear on Microsoft's commitment to Surface in business, and Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines join the growing number of commercial airlines using Surface Pro 3 to help give pilots the best, most efficient and productive in-flight experience," he said.
Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines are not the first airlines to deploy Microsoft devices to staff. Microsoft inked a deal with Delta Airlines in August 2013 to roll out 19,000 Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 smartphones to cabin crew.
Microsoft launched the Surface Pro 3 in August claiming it to be the ultimate all-in-one device that functions equally well as a tablet and laptop.
