LOS ANGELES: Cisco has unveiled a high-end immersive TelePresence system, which it claims offers enhanced functionality but with reduced power and bandwidth requirements.
The IX5000 system comprises three 70in screens and can be used by six to 18 people, Cisco said. The bandwidth demands are lessened by the use of H.265 compression technology, while power requirements are under 10 amps.
The IX5000 has three 4K cameras, 18 speakers and a whopping 17,502 "sound-capturing micro holes".
The company has also dramatically reduced the weight of the system by removing metal elements and using recycled plastic, while the depth is now just 8in, making it far easier to deliver and install in most offices.
Rowan Trollope, senior vice president of Cisco's Collaboration Technology Group, said at the Collaboration Summit 2014 event that the changes were implemented to meet the needs of customers.
"Customers told us the biggest problem with older systems is the work required to install them. You had to spend hundreds of dollars to get the room ready for the kit - the lighting, the power, even painting the wall the right colour," he said.
"So we set about making this system as flexible as possible so it doesn't require any room remediation."
Cisco said that this makes the system enticing as the total cost of ownership is reduced.
The IX5000 costs $299,000 at full list price, although Cisco suggested that channel vendors may be able to sell it at lower prices. This is 'cheaper' than the $425,000 system unveiled by Polycom earlier this year.
The launch comes after Cisco promised to improve its portfolio of videoconferencing systems back in 2012. Since then the firm has won several design awards for its video tools.
