Salesforce has launched Salesforce1 Lightning Connect to help businesses integrate external and legacy back-office data into their Salesforce platforms.
Built on the OData open data access protocol, Lightning Connect has been designed to reduce the need for IT to manage multiple silos of data, according to Salesforce.
It also removes the need for complex data integration projects involving the extraction and migration of legacy data from obsolete server-based programmes, which Salesforce claims is a major pain for CIOs and IT departments.
This means that data can be taken from external apps and used in Salesforce services.
For example, sales teams can bring order data into Sales Cloud1, allowing sales executives to check order status via the Salesforce1 Mobile App while out in the field, the firm said.
To achieve this level of data integration, specialists such as Informatica, Jitterbit, MuleSoft, Progress Software, SnapLogic and SoftwareAG have built adaptors for Lightning Connect to facilitate easy data transfer from traditional IT platforms into the cloud.
Lightning Connect enables data to be integrated in real time, which avoids the need to copy and save data on Salesforce platforms, thereby simplifying data management for IT teams, the company claimed.
Lightning Connect also allows developers to create apps that use data from beyond Salesforce1 in conjunction with customer data stored on the Salesforce platform.
Toby Lester, vice president of technology, architecture and innovation at Lightning Connect customer Brown-Forman, said the system allows his company to focus on projects that generate innovation rather than complex data integration tasks.
"With Salesforce1 Lightning Connect, we can continue to change the role of IT by eliminating the pain of building integration after integration and allowing IT to focus on building the apps needed to keep everyone productive," he said.
