Virgin Media is taking its high speed 152MB broadband services to 5,000 extra homes in Glasgow. The firm said the rollout will ‘supercharge' the area.
"Extending our network across the region means thousands more families will benefit from the UK's fastest widely available broadband for the first time," said, Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media's CEO. "We are proud to be supercharging Glasgow, helping build an exciting digital future for the city."
Glasgow city council leader, Gordon Matheson, who worked with Virgin on the rollout, said he expected the high speed internet to inspire the local economy and its technology users, and help the older community make the most of the internet.
"We want everyone to be included in the digital age, whether that's young people looking to be the next Bill Gates, developers of video games, or older people getting online to communicate with friends and family, no-one should be left behind," he said.
"I'm delighted that Virgin Media is investing in the city's digital future and bringing superfast broadband to more homes in Glasgow."
Virgin Media said it has set up a "Digital Making Space" in the city and will work with the council-backed Digital Glasgow on training, education and coding clubs. Coding clubs, which are for the youth in the city, will happen on 17 November and 8 December at Glasgow's Mitchell Library.
"For many without internet access or a basic knowledge of IT skills the digital world can feel daunting," said Neil Paterson, training lead at Digital Glasgow.
"Virgin Media is helping us reach more people through our new network of sports coaches which will show more people how beneficial and fun being online can be."
Earlier this year Virgin confirmed plans to rollout its network to 100,000 homes in the East End of London.
