Panasonic has extended its family of 7in ruggedised tablets with the Toughpad FZ-B2, an Android-based device described as the perfect tool for mobile workers thanks to its long battery life, daylight clear display and flexible configuration options.
Set to be available from December, the Toughpad FZ-B2 is based on an Intel 1.83GHz quad-core Celeron N2930 Bay Trail processor with 2GB memory and 32GB eMMC flash storage.
Unlike the existing Toughpad FZ-M1, which it closely resembles, the new model runs the Android 4.4 Kitkat operating system instead of Windows 8.1 Pro.
"With the Toughpad FZ-B2 we have designed the most powerful and flexible business Android tablet on the market," said Jan Kaempfer, head of European marketing for Panasonic Computer Product Solutions.
"Alongside our other outstanding Windows-based 7in Toughpads, we have a family of business rugged tablets that can be tailored to meet the needs of any mobile worker, in any business, in any industry."
At 540g, the Toughpad FZ-B2 weighs the same as its sibling, and is similarly ruggedised with an IP65 ingress protection rating for resistance to dust and water and drop tested to a height of 150cm, according to Panasonic.
It features a 7in sunlight-viewable WXGA Active Matrix display with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels, and a capacitive touchscreen digitiser with five-finger multi-touch capabilities.
On the connectivity side, the Toughpad is equipped with an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 WiFi adapter as standard, with an optional Qualcomm Gobi 5000 3G mobile broadband module.
The tablet also has a full size USB 3.0 for peripherals and a microSD for storage expansion.
Panasonic said the Toughpad FZ-B2 is highly flexible with configuration options to transform the tablet for vertical applications. Options here include a 2D barcode reader, smartcard reader and hot swappable battery.
The standard battery has a quoted life of up to seven hours, but this can be extended to 14 hours with an optional high capacity battery pack.
An array of purpose built accessories is also available, including a Lite-cradle, vehicle dock, multi-battery charger, shoulder, hand and rotate straps, carry cases and a passive pen stylus.
The starting price for the Toughpad FZ-B2 will be £591 plus VAT when the device is available.
