IBM and Twitter are working on a project to "take the pulse of the planet" by offering what they claim will be real-time insight into consumer and customer communications.
IBM said that businesses can benefit from the millions of messages and comments made on Twitter every day, and use them to provide immediate and up-to-date feedback, response and engagement.
"I use Twitter as a sort of market-intelligence radar. I follow very smart people to see what they're reading and thinking," said Alistair Rennie, general manager for business analytics at IBM, in a blog post.
"Now, for the first time, business leaders will be able to tap into the Twitter stream in powerful new ways to harvest insights that help them understand customer sentiment more deeply, develop hit products and services, and anticipate sudden shifts in moods and markets."
Information from Twitter is being fed into IBM's cloud, services and analytics businesses, including Watson.
"IBM will offer Twitter data as part of select cloud-based services, including IBM Watson Analytics, a new cognitive computing service that delivers predictive analytics and data visualisation to the palm of your hand," Rennie added.
"Twitter and IBM will collaborate to develop a set of enterprise applications designed to improve business decisions across industries and professions. The first target will be applications and services for sales, marketing and customer service."
Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo said that his company's data will provide IBM and its customers with a range of benefits.
"When it comes to enterprise transformation, IBM is an undisputed global leader in enabling companies to take advantage of emerging technologies and platforms," he said.
"This important partnership with IBM will change the way business decisions are made, from identifying emerging market opportunities to better engaging with clients, partners and employees."
The move is one of several partnerships by IBM, which recently teamed up with Microsoft to host each other's cloud products.
