Hosting firm Rackspace has extended its OnMetal Cloud Servers platform to enable customers to quickly deploy Hadoop onto dedicated server instances with just a few clicks, speeding up big data projects, the firm said.
Called OnMetal Cloud Big Data, the new service is currently available only in North America, but is expected to be rolled out to Rackspace data centres worldwide by the end of 2014, the firm said.
The new service builds on Rackspace's OnMetal Cloud Servers platform, which was introduced in June. This combines the on-demand nature and scalability of cloud servers with the performance and total control of dedicated hardware.
One of the prime use cases for bare-metal infrastructure has been processing big data workloads, typically using Hadoop, so the new service is a logical next step for Rackspace.
In addition to Hadoop itself, Rackspace is supporting Apache Spark as part of OnMetal Cloud Big Data. Spark is a data processing framework created to offer much better performance than Hadoop's better known MapReduce function, but for more specialised applications.
Chief technology officer John Engates said that the offering breaks new ground for the world of big data.
"For the first time, Hadoop and Spark can have the best of both worlds: bare metal performance with cloud agility, all backed by [Rackspace] Fanatical Support," he said.
OnMetal Cloud Big Data for Spark is engineered for break-through performance, according to Rackspace. With Spark, customers benefit from high-speed memory-optimised processing to accelerate data discovery.
Benchmark tests indicate that users can expect to see a typical 50 to 100 percent performance improvement compared with the same workloads running on Rackspace's standard Cloud Big Data Platform, the firm said.
