Microsoft has extended the big data capabilities of its Azure cloud computing platform, adding a real-time analytics capability to Azure HDInsight, new machine learning capabilities and integration with the Hortonworks Data Platform.
The real-time analytics come courtesy of the Apache Storm project, now available as a preview in HDInsight, the Hadoop service delivered from Microsoft's Azure cloud and developed in partnership with Hadoop specialist Hortonworks.
Microsoft said it was offering support for Storm to enable customers to process millions of items of Hadoop data, garnered from sources such as devices connected to the Internet of Things, in near real time using a fully managed Hadoop service.
"By bringing real-time analytics capabilities to HDInsight, we are opening up new customer scenarios such as the ability to analyse operational data in real time for predictive maintenance," said corporate vice president for data platform TK Rengarajan, writing on the Microsoft blog.
Apache Storm is a distributed computation framework created for processing fast, large streams of data in real time on Hadoop, unlike the existing MapReduce framework, which works on a batch processing basis.
Meanwhile, Microsoft partner Hortonworks has added hybrid data connectors to the latest version of the Hortonworks Data Platform, Microsoft said. This enables customers to extend their on-premise Hadoop deployments out to Azure, and use Azure for automated backup of Hadoop clusters.
Microsoft also said it has added new capabilities to its Azure Machine Learning service for testers to evaluate, including a recommendation engine for adding product recommendations onto a website, and an anomaly detection service for predictive maintenance or fraud detection.
Azure Machine Learning has been available as a public preview since July, and is ultimately intended to enable customers and partners to implement cloud-based predictive analytics solutions for applications such as search engines and credit card fraud prevention systems.
