BT faces delays in launching its consumer mobile network as ‘technical issues’ are posing problems that could delay the launch until some point in 2015.
The Telegraph has reported that the telecoms giant is struggling to implement the necessary technology that would let it pass mobile data traffic to WiFi services when available.
Passing the traffic to WiFi would help reduce the requirements on EE’s network, thereby reducing the cost BT will pay EE for the use of its network.
BT CEO Gavin Patterson has said previously that being able to move customers to its WiFi network of 5.6 million access points was key to making the service viable.
In a statement BT did not explain whether there had been a delay or not, merely stating that it had always expected to take two years to have the necessary technology in place for the call handover service.
“We have always been very clear that it will take the best part of two years to develop our consumer femtocell service, and this remains the case,” the firm said.
EE is also working on WiFi calling options as part of a move to reduce the traffic on its network. Three, O2 and Vodafone are offering similar services.
Despite the problems with its consumer rollout BT has already started offering some mobile services to businesses with 4G deals provided to SMEs hosted on the EE network.
Its One Phone service is also designed around mobile services by allowing businesses to set up office phone systems without the need for a landline.
