Samsung is aiming at data centre customers with a new high-performance solid-state drive (SSD) product that offers 3.2TB of storage on a single PCI Express card.
The SM1715 is a half-height, half-length PCI Express card supporting the Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface or NVM Express (NVMe) specifications, designed to provide high-speed storage connected directly to the processor via a PCI Express link.
It is based on Samsung's own 3D V-Nand flash technology, which boosts the storage density of flash chips by stacking layers of memory cells on top of each other, enabling Samsung to offer 3.2TB of storage in single adapter card.
The SM1715 is an upgraded version of the earlier XS1715, which was delivered in a 2.5in drive format, in terms of drive performance and reliability.
This translates to a sequential read performance of 3,000MBps and sequential write of up to 2,200MBps, according to Samsung, with random read performance of up to 750,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) and random writes at up to 130,000 IOPS.
In terms of reliability, the SM1715 can withstand an impressive 10 complete drive writes per day for five years. This enables it to deliver a level of reliability that enterprise server manufacturers have been requesting for in high-end storage solutions, Samsung claimed.
Samsung's vice president for Memory Marketing Jeeho Baek said that the firm plans to introduce V-Nand SSDs with even higher performance, density and reliability in the future.
"Beginning with mass production of this new V-Nand-based NVMe SSD, which delivers the highest level of performance and density available today, we expect to greatly expand the high-density SSD market," he said.
