Apple has purchased digital magazine startup Prss, in a potential bid to improve the appeal of its mobile devices as a vehicle for smaller content publishers.
The acquisition was reported by Dutch-language iOS-centric blog, iCulture, which cited a "source with knowledge of the deal" as the basis of the claim.
In a statement sent to V3, Apple all but confirmed the acquisition: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
While Apple remains tight-lipped on the details of the deal, its purchase of Prss will give the Cupertino company access to a platform that enables the creation of iPad-compatible magazines with tools that require no knowledge of coding.
TechCrunch described Prss as "essentially a magazine-focused version of iBooks Author" and believes that the deal could provide better publishing tools for digital periodicals.
In contrast to iBooks Author, which is primarily aimed at creating textbooks and e-books, Prss is targeted more at creating publications for Apple's native Newsstand app. The firm publishes a weekly travel-focused e-magazine called Trvl via its platform.
As such, with Prss integrated into its fold, Apple may be able to attract more small and independent content producers to publish on Newsstand, which is currently dominated by digital magazines and newspapers from major publishers.
TechCrunch suggested that Apple may be simply be "looking to fill out its roster on the digital publishing and design side" with expertise from Prss, which is not likely to lead to any new product announcements.
V3 requested more details from Apple regarding its recent acquisitions, but as indicated in the statement, the company declined to comment.
Apple's last major acquisition was Beats in August, but a lack of news surrounding the $3bn purchase led to speculation that the Beats Music brand was being abandoned, though Apple has denied the rumours.
