Roughly 46 percent of all iPhones and iPads are running on Apple's latest iOS 8 operating system, following the launch of the firm's latest iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.
Apple revealed the statistics on its developer forum, showing iOS 8 adoption has skyrocketed since the OS was released on 17 September.
Despite its rapid uptake iOS 7 is the most common version of the OS and is running on 49 percent of all Apple's mobile devices. The remaining five percent of devices are listed as running on an unspecified "earlier" version of iOS.
iOS 8 is listed by Apple as its most advanced to date and adds several new features and under-the-hood upgrades to the OS.
Key enterprise additions include improved password security, S/MIME features and VIP threads, support for Microsoft Exchange out of office replies and OS X Continuity.
Continuity is the latest stage in Apple's ongoing work to converge its iOS and Mac OS X operating systems and offers users a variety of synchronisation features. One of the most useful of these is the ability to AirDrop files between the iOS and Mac OS devices.
On a more consumer front iOS 8 adds HealthKit and HomeKit services. HealthKit is a health-focused service designed to help users track their calorie intake and exercise routines. HomeKit is an Internet of Things-focused service designed to let users control household devices using their iPhone.
The rapid uptake comes despite widespread bug reports about iOS 8. Many iPhone 4S users reported poor performance when they upgraded to iOS 8. Other bug reports include instances of a disappearing on-screen keyboard and reduced battery life.
Apple's rapid update cycle is in contrast to its key rival Android. Research from OpenSignal showed that just one fifth of Android devices were running on the latest 4.4 KitKat version in August.
