Ricoh has added a new model to its line of GelJet printers, offering high-quality colour printing for small businesses and professionals at a low price point of just £60, backed by an on-site warranty.
Available immediately, the GelJet Aficio SG 2100N is Ricoh's lowest-priced printer based on this technology, and is claimed to offer reliability and low running costs for users while delivering high-quality full colour printouts at resolutions of up to 1200x1200dpi on media up to A4 in size.
The printer is network ready with a built-in 10/100 Ethernet port in addition to USB 2.0 connectivity, and can print at speeds up to 29 pages per minute with a duty cycle of up to 10,000 prints per month.
Steven Hastings, IT Distribution Channel director for Ricoh UK, told V3 the firm's larger GelJet printers are widely used in the public sector, but this model has been designed specifically to appeal to smaller companies and individuals.
"It's intended to be ideal for the small office and home office, for small companies and the business person who often works from home," he said.
GelJet is Ricoh's own print technology, and described by the firm as a hybrid of laser and inkjet technologies. It uses viscous pigment-based inks derived from soya, making them non-toxic and rapid drying, the firm claimed.
The printer's green credentials are enhanced by the fact it is constructed from recycled plastic, and an eco mode for printing that uses only 50 percent of the standard volume of ink. It also uses only 27W of energy when printing, equivalent to a single light bulb, Ricoh claimed.
As part of the GelJet technology, the paper is fed through the printer by a transfer belt rather than rollers, which enables it to handle relatively thick media of up to 163g/m2 in weight from the 250-sheet standard tray, or up to 250g/m2 using manual feed.
Ricoh said that the SG 2100N has a typical running cost of 14p per page in full colour, which falls to 7.5p in eco mode. Although higher than a typical laser printer, Ricoh claimed this is because this model uses smaller, low-yield gel cartridges, and that other models in the range can print at 5p per page.
The SG 2100N supports printing from Windows PCs and Mac OS X systems, while Ricoh also offers Smart Device apps that allow for wireless printing from Apple iOS and Android devices, so long as the printer is connected to a network that also has WiFi access.
A final key selling point for business users is that Ricoh is offering a two-year onsite warranty for the SG 2100N. Hastings said that Ricoh saw it as important that a business customer could rely on having a technician visit their site to fix any hardware malfunction, although at this price point, the printer might simply be replaced rather than repaired.
The GelJet Aficio SG 2100N is available chiefly through Office Depot in the UK, Ricoh said.
