The government claims to have saved £200m through improved use of technology in the past 12 months as part of its ongoing efficiency review.
Since 2009-10, the government's Efficiency and Reform Group (ERG) has conducted a review of spending across government in a bid to tackle what it saw as excessive waste across the public sector.
In its latest figures for 2013-2014, the government said that a whopping £14.3bn had been saved when compared to spending in the 2009-2010 period, with savings made in numerous areas, such as workforce reductions and property sales.
Improved use of digital technology was cited as helping reduce spend by £200m. “Over £200m has been saved by improving government’s digital services and moving more services online, ensuring that citizens’ experience is simpler, clearer and faster,” the review said.
“The government has also radically overhauled technology spend to get the best possible value for money. For example, £62m was saved by bringing Directgov and BusinessLink websites onto Gov.UK.”
Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude welcomed the latest figures and said more could be done to improve government spending.
“Eliminating waste and cutting the deficit is a key part of this government’s long-term plan for the economy,” he said.
The government said ongoing efforts to improve efficiency across the public sector include the ERG working with departments to ensure the best possible deals on items ranging from printer cartridges to computers used in schools, hospitals and other government buildings.
