Cat Phones has unveiled a new highly rugged smartphone, the Cat B15Q, which improves on the Cat B15 predecessor with upgraded software and a powerful quad-core processor.
The Cat B15Q is the first rugged smartphone to run Google's Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system, Cat claims, and is targeted at buyers wanting something tougher than the Samsung Galaxy S5 or Sony Xperia Z2.
The smartphone is IP67 certified, which means that it can handle drops onto concrete and being submerged in water, and can function in temperatures from -25°C to 55°C.
The Cat B15Q's 4in screen has a 480x800 resolution Gorilla Glass touchscreen and this includes Wet Finger Tracking support, which means you can operate it even when the device is wet.
As well as an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat, the Cat B15Q improves on its predecessor with a quad-core 1.3GHz Mediatek MT6577 processor, and the firm has added Bluetooth 4.0 and an LED flash to accompany the 5MP rear-facing camera.
The casing has been toughened up too, Cat boasting that the B15Q's speaker and microphone now come encased in silver anodised aluminium and shock absorbent rubber, making it more resistant than last year's model.
Cat Phones CEO Oliver Schulte said: "With the Cat B15Q we have taken consumer feedback onboard from its predecessor and added, for example, a faster processor and improved imaging capabilities.
"This is the first rugged handset available globally to support Android's KitKat so users no longer need to choose between smartphone durability and the latest Android features. The B15Q is a key milestone in Cat phones becoming the number one global rugged device vendor by 2015."
The Cat B15Q will be available in the UK next month. There is no word on pricing yet, but it is likely to fetch around the same price as last year's Cat B15, which cost £300 SIM-free.
